Being immersed in the wedding industry has huge perks to seeing what emerging trends in makeup are year to year. I am able to see what’s popular for brides and what’s being requested over and over again. I’ve seen the change of makeup trends over the years, and what’s emerging on the wedding scene: what’s trendy, what’s classic, and what’s natural. Let’s break it all down.
For the past two years, we’ve seen more of a lean towards bronzey makeup. Tan, glowing, brown neutral tones dominate for sure. That means starting with a bronze base on the body in order to pull off this look. Whether it’s fake or natural, you must have a tan to pull off bronzey makeup. When getting a spray tan, I always tell my brides to have your spray tan artist to skip the face or go light on the face. Spray tan on the face is problematic for having the makeup look as flawless as possible. It can make it look patchy and tends to want to settle into pores making the skin appear dry, accentuate pores, and difficult to work with. Bronzey makeup is neutral tones, meaning browns, tans, golds and champagne colors. Brown eyeliner and nude lips tops off the look. Blush is optional and personal preference. We’re seeing less and less bright pink blush and more of the “just came out of the sun” type blush so a reddish pink hue blush. Glow is essential to this look so using a foundation or skin prep that gives a glow is key. Cream products help create a glow and powder Highlighters, shimmer bronzer and blushes also help to give you a glowing appearance. Another thing to consider when wanting to look glowy, is communicating that to your photographer. The way the photos are shot and edited will also have an impact on how glowy the makeup photographs. It’s imperative to clue your photographer in when having a vision of how you want the makeup to shoot as well. I can create your exact vision but if your photographer has a specific editing style, the vision can be changed and lost based on how the photo is shot or edited. One reason why I love doing the engagement photos as a trial for makeup. It’s a collaborative way to see how we all work together and to have a conversation afterwards. This has been extremely helpful to my brides in the past.
Classic makeup is going to be trend-less, meaning no matter what is going on in the current moment in makeup, this makeup will be relevant years from now and now. We can also call it timeless. I would recommend classic makeup for the person who isn’t into trends overall for their wedding day and wants a more universal timeless wedding day. That means your dress, florals and decor are also timeless. Usually someone who is leaving toward classic timeless decor for their wedding day also would prefer timeless makeup and hair. Classic timeless makeup is natural, enhancing your features but not overly focusing on anyone feature because that could indicate a trend. For instance, brushed up laminated brows or over-lined lips indicate a trend which could be relevant now but not in 5-10 years. Classic tones would be neutral colors but also hints of rose and pinks on the cheeks and lips.
There is a trend currently for a natural “no makeup, makeup” look, as well. This trend is showing very understated eye makeup, no dramatic smokey eyes, very light to no liner or a shadow liner or slight shadow wing. Lashes are very relevant still in this trend and some are wanting a very lifted lash look with simple eye makeup and little to no liner, and others are wanting very natural to no lashes look which we still would want to a achieve with a few individual lashes, of course. Lashes are still very imperative to a wedding look, in my opinion, but subtle lashes versus a very heavy lash look can be opted for. The skin is very light coverage and skin like, glowy and “fresh out of a facial” looking. In order to achieve this skin look, one must really work on their actual skin, of course. Having regular facials, using consistent skincare and working on the texture of your skin allows for the success or not of this look. Dermaplaning would also be crucial for this look, because it removes any peach fuzz and creates the most silky texture on the skin for the makeup to rest on and work with.
Trends in weddings, like anything else, will change year to year. During the trial process is a great time to discuss your desires, show inspiration photos and we can discuss your overall look. We can play around with different trends, photograph it and decide is it’s your wedding day vision or if not. As the makeup artist and professional, it is my job to educate you, as well. I can help you understand what’s trendy and what’s more classic. That’s the “beauty” of using an experienced vendor who has been in the industry for years. That’s why you hired us, and we’re here to help you create your perfect vision! Hope this helps for any future bride and I would love to chat more about this with you during our sessions together! Cheers, beauties!!
